BAT and Philip Morris settle patent dispute over e-cigarettes

02/05/2024

According to a press announcement from BAT, US-based Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco (BAT) have reached a global settlement agreement to end their patent battle over HTP, or hot tobacco products, and e-cigarettes.

The accord stops all cases alleging patent infringement and forbids new lawsuits pertaining to HTP and e-cigarettes that are already on the market.

Nonetheless, it will enable the release of new product versions on both sides.

The British group saw the global agreement as the most effective means of achieving its objectives.

In 2020, BAT filed lawsuits against two of its largest competitors, alleging that the Philip Morris-developed IQOS tobacco heating technology, which is marketed by Altria Group, violates its patents in the United States.
