Following the vote, the document goes to the Senate for approval, after which it will go to U.S. President Joe Biden for his signature.

The government's current funding period ends on Friday. The new document extends it through September 30. Without its passage, the country would face a "shutdown", that is, a suspension of many government agencies.

Congress appropriates $782 billion for defense, $730 billion for non-defense items. The full document exceeds 2,500 pages.

It includes the largest package of military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine to date, which also includes spending on strengthening NATO's "eastern flank.
