Imports Of Fertiliser Into Brazil Increase As Farmers Prepare To Plant New Crops
According to official data issued on Friday, Brazilian fertiliser imports increased 18.6 per cent in June to 4.15 million tonnes, allaying concerns about delivery problems due to trade restrictions on key suppliers.

According to the data, Brazil, which imports approximately 85 percent of its fertiliser needs, should have enough of these inputs to begin planting summer crops such as soybeans and early corn in September.

Following sanctions on major suppliers Belarus and Russia, there was worry that Brazilian farmers may face a fertiliser scarcity to feed crucial crops, resulting in reduced applications and slower grain area expansion.

Strong trade flows highlight Brazil's diplomatic efforts to ensure supplies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

At a recent event, Agriculture Minister Marcos Montes stated that President Jair Bolsonaro's action was significant on the subject of fertiliser supply, adding, "We don't foresee supply disruptions this harvest, which we feared so much."

"With imports of 4.15 million tonnes in June and an expected reduction in fertilizer use on the next soy crop, farmers are guaranteed," Jeferson Souza, an analyst with Agrinvest Commodities, told Reuters.

According to Souza statistics, this is the biggest level of June imports in the last five years, and it is also the second straight month this year that imports have increased above 4 million tonnes.
