Toyota becomes world leader in car sales

With more than 10 million cars sold in 2023, Japanese automaker Toyota Motor rose to the top of the global automotive sales rankings for the fourth year in a row.

A preliminary estimate made public on Tuesday states that sales of Toyota and Lexus automobiles reached an all-time high of about 10.31 million in the calendar year 2023, up 7.7 percent from the previous year. Specifically, 3.42 million hybrid cars were sold—another record. 2023 saw 104.02 thousand electric automobiles sold, a 325% increase over the previous year.

The Toyota Motor Group sold around 11.52 million cars in total, including those sold by Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors.

Volkswagen, the German automaker that is Toyota's closest competitor, sold roughly 9.24 million cars in 2023, according to Kyodo News Agency.
