If current European Council chairman Charles Michel steps down, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban might take over as interim leader, Politico reports.

If Michel steps down in the summer of 2024, leaders of the EU would need to negotiate a replacement quickly. Since Hungary will take over the rotating presidency of the European Council in July, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban may be the chosen candidate if no consensus is reached.

The remaining 26 European leaders "hoped to avoid" a "reign of six months" under his leadership as tensions with Orban are building up, the magazine notes.

Charles Michel had before declared that he would step down from his position early in order to compete for the European Parliament.
