The appointment of the pope was revealed on Thursday by French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, who addressed the crowd assembled in St. Peter's Square from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

The Cardinal Prevost, who is American-Peruvian, was born in Chicago in 1955. He attended the seminary of the Order of St. Augustine. Prevost earned his bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences from Villanova University in 1977. In that same year, he became a member of the Augustinian Order and made his initial vows. He possesses a master's degree in theology. He was ordained as a priest in the Order of St. Augustine in Rome in 1982.

He worked as a missionary in Peru, where he lived for over a decade. Chosen Prior of the Augustinian Order in 2001, he subsequently served as Superior General, guiding the order on a global scale.

In 2014, Pope Francis designated him as bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and raised him to the cardinal in 2023. Inside the Vatican, Prevost earned recognition as a strong advocate for the reforms started by Francis.

In February 2025, Pope Francis promoted him to the position of cardinal-bishop.

Prevost is recognized for advocating a moderate path: he promotes enhancing the Church's social function, assisting the impoverished and migrants, and increasing the involvement of laity in ecclesiastical frameworks. Simultaneously, Prevost upholds conventional perspectives on moral theology.
