Apple stated that the change received unanimous approval from the board of directors and stems from a "careful, long-term succession planning process." Cook will remain as interim CEO until summer concludes and will collaborate with Ternus on the operational shift.

Cook became part of Apple in 1998 and assumed the role of CEO in 2011. Under his leadership, the company's market value increased from $350 billion to $4 trillion, and its yearly revenue almost quadrupled, surpassing $416 billion by the close of fiscal year 2025.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and was appointed vice president of hardware engineering in 2013. The company highlights that Ternus was instrumental in the creation of multiple product lines, encompassing iPad, AirPods, along with various generations of iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch. He also managed the Mac's shift to Apple Silicon chips.

Before becoming part of Apple, Ternus served as an engineer at Virtual Research Systems and obtained a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
