Apple’s iOS9 Update Runs into Trouble after Users Report Device Crashing During Upgrade

Following previous complaints, significant number Apple Inc customers have reported that their mobile devices have crashed after attempting to upload the new iOS 9 operating system, reported Reuters.

There have been similar launch glitches for the US based tech giant in the past.

The disgruntled customers, who choose to express their dissatisfaction on Facebook and Twitter, complained primarily of two problems – one of which seems to be connected to the older models of Apple iPhones and iPads.

"It is beyond inconvenient to not be able to use your phone for a day," said student Pip Cordi as staff in the Apple store in central Sydney looked at her phone on Friday, according to a report by Reuters.

"I have a lot of apps that I use for school - things like language apps and dictionaries and that's all really important for my studies," Cordi has been reported to have said.

Another iPhone user, Zorry Coates, was asked to choose between two options - either returning her phone to factory settings - losing any non-backed-up data - or waiting until Apple technicians announced an update, this after Coates had spent three hours in the Apple store.

"They said they were aware of the problem and their engineers were working on it 24/7, but they couldn't tell me when - or how - I would get a solution, I'm very annoyed because it's wasted half my day.

They pride themselves on being a company that's flawless," Coates had said.

Reuters reported that Apple officials did not want to comment on the allegations.

However, according to Mixpanel, a San Francisco, California-based analytics company, as many as more than 16 percent of the iOS users had upgraded their phones on Thursday.

Following the troubled rollout of iOS 8, the number of dissatisfied customers was significant in the social media era, said Charlie Brown, a technology expert at Sydney-based Cybershack. Even as Apple had released several further updates to iOS8, some of the bugs were never fully fixed.

"The risk to Apple in terms of having dissatisfied customers is that as their customer base grows, so will the number of those dissatisfied customers," said Brown.

Error message, "Software Update Failed", was posted as screen shots by many on social media site after the iOS users failed to upgrade to iOS9 while others reported that the upgrades failed after several minutes and the users had to start the process all over again.

Tech analysts explained that the possible reason for the failure was the failure of servers caused by overcrowding of iOS users at the same time.

"It's like the Black Friday thing. Some websites get creamed on the traffic on Black Friday," said Bob O'Donnell of Technalysis Research, referring to the major U.S. shopping sale day after Thanksgiving.
Even as the latest upgrade had been deemed by Apple as "friendly" to the older devices after the iOS 8 problems, many users with older devices reported their devices seizing up on a "swipe to upgrade" page.

"Apple were saying the downloading mechanism doesn't take as much space to download," said Sydney-based Graham McKay, an IT support specialist.

Earlier this week, Apple announced delay in the release of watch OS 2, its updated operating system for the Apple Watch after a bug was detected during the development stage.
