Apple is setting up a team to manufacture wireless modem chips in-house.  It will hire engineers for the California office to design the chips. Broadcom and Skyworks Solutions are currently producing chips for the company, Bloomberg reports.

According to the agency, the company has started looking for a few dozen chip design talent in Irvine, not far from the Broadcom plant. Skyworks and other chipmakers also have locations in Irvine. The company's job listings show it is willing to hire engineers who have experience with wireless modem chips and semiconductors.

As Bloomberg found out, employees at the company's Irvine unit will work on wireless communication reception systems, RF integrated circuits and other systems. They will also work on semiconductors used in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
