The ban that has been imposed on Chinese mobile applications TikTok and WeChat by the United States have violated the rules and regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO), alleged Beijing n a meeting of the global trade regulatory body, said reports quoting a trade official.
In addition to ordering a ban on the downloads of the two mobile apps, the administration of the United States president Donald Trump has also ordered Bytedance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, to sell of the US operations of the short video sharing app to an American company because of the government’s concerns of threats to national security.
However the government order has been questioned by a US judge.
The measures “are clearly inconsistent with WTO rules, restrict cross-border trading services and violate the basic principles and objectives of the multilateral trading system,” said a representative for China while speaking at the closed-door meeting of the WTO recently, claimed reports quoting a trade official familiar with the matter whose name was not disclosed as the official was not authorized to speak to the media.
The failure of the US to provide concrete evidence of why it had taken the measures on the Chinese apps and therefore the measures were a “clear abuse” of rules, the Chinese delegate said at the WTO meeting, said reports quoting the trade official.
The United States defended its measures taken against the Chinese apps at the same meeting and argued that the actions and the orders of the Trump administration were aimed at mitigate national security threats and risks posed by the apps, said the reports quoting the official. The US administration has previously expressed concerns about Chinese government authorities and agencies accessing personal data of American users of the apps.
No comment on the issue was available from the office of the US Trade Representative as well as from the Chinese mission to the WTO.
This statement made at the WTO by the Chinese representative will by itself have no consequences even though there is an option for China to launch an official legal complaint about the measures by the Trump administration with the WTO.
