China Lifts Approval Freeze On New Video Games Launch

12/29/2018

A newly released list shows that eighty video games have been approved by the Chinese authorities to make an online appearance.

On Saturday, December 29, 2018, China gave its approval on releasing eighty video games online. This approval severs the freeze that was put on for “most of the year” on such matters.

Nevertheless, the titles that were approved and appeared on the website list of the “State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television” did not mention any games from Tencent Holdings Ltd, the latter being a leader in the respective industry.

In March 2018, China, which holds the “biggest” market in the world for gaming halted the approval on new video games at a time when “a regulatory overhaul” put into motion due to the increasing criticism of video games promoting violence. Moreover, there were also allegations that these games were one of the reasons for “myopia as well as addiction among young users”.
