05/19/2015

China overtook France in the vineyards area, taking in the world ranking second only to Spain. In terms of wine production China, however, remains on the 8th place in the world. The first place is occupied by France, where the vineyards are reduced. This data was presented by International Vine Organization (OIV), which unites 45 countries.

By increasing its Vineyard production last 15 years, China has increased the total vineyard area of 800 000 hectares. In 2000, Chinese plantation is only 4% of the world's vineyard area, now this proportion rose to 11%.

OIV notes, however, that the "victory" of Chinese figures still need to be checked and confirmed. It is not known yet exactly how much of grapes produced in China goes to winemakers. However - as noted by the head of the OIV, Jean-Marie Oran - the main varieties grown in China are wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot etc.

Grape plantation is now multiplying and expanding in China and South America. In Europe, by contrast, it continues to decline in the area because of the desire of the European Commission to regulate the production, to prevent the fall in prices. Between 2008 and 2011, European vineyards cut by 94,000 hectares annually. Now the EU vine is grown on an area of 3.5 million hectares.

Spain remains the top country most littered with grapes, where plantations cover more than 1 million hectares. In France, the total area of vineyards is already less than 800 thousand hectares (792 thousand). In third place is Italy (690 000).

Over the past 10 years, the area of French vineyards was reduced by 10%. This did not prevent the French to maintain first place in the world in terms of wine production - 47 million hectoliters. French winemakers are confidently ahead of colleagues from Italy, Spain and the United States.

OIV, the third consecutive year, the United States held the first place in the world in terms of total consumption of wine products. Americans drank in 2014 of 30 million wine. 22 million hectoliters they produced themselves, from them - 4 million were sent for export, and another 10 million were imported from other countries.

The first place in the total volume of "drinking wine" does not mean that Americans drink a lot. Not everyone of the 320 million States’ population like wine. In per capita, the United States’ consumption lags behind the old continent.

France, for example, has much smaller population of 66 million people, but the wine "per capita" take much more proudly holding first place in the world. An average resident of Italy is well ahead of the average American by libations too. Although, as experts note, the per capita consumption of wine in the United States has been steadily increasing with the number of his fans.
