Deutsche Telekom unveils next gen 5G mobile antennas in Europe

10/12/2017

5G technology will first be rolled out in Japan and South Korea in 2018, followed quickly by the U.S. In 2020 5G technology will be launched in Europe.

On Thursday, ahead of its global launch in 2020, Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s biggest telecoms provider, showcased its first ultra high-speed next generation mobile antennas.

Deutsche Telekom stated this was the first time a real world usage of the technology has been tested in Europe, with download speeds zipping past 2 gigabits per second on customer’s devices; on commercial sites, there was a latency of just 3 milliseconds.

Incidentally, the antennas are manufactured by China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.

“This is a very decisive developmental step on the way to the global launch of 5G, which is planned for 2020,” said Claudia Nemat, a member of Deutsche Telekom’s board, in a statement.

The German telecoms provider is expected to roll out the technology commercially only in 2020. The bandwidth for 5G technology is expected to be in slices of new bandwidth since it can then cater to specialized services for connected cars, pre-booking parking spots and even smart trash cans.

5G technology will be deployed in South Korea and Japan in 2018, followed by the United States, where Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile has a significant market presence.
