"We completely align with the vision of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV regarding the necessity for a strong and impactful legal framework for artificial intelligence. In Europe, this is not merely an aspiration; it is already happening. This pertains to our rules regarding artificial intelligence, digital services regulation, the digital market, and data protection," the spokesperson stated during a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.

He added that the EU can take pride in the fact that today, in Europe, "we can discuss the presence of a well-defined legal framework for AI." He stressed that this is "essential for safeguarding children from damaging influences and averting inappropriate content."

Pope Leo XIV devoted his initial encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas," released on May 25, 2026, to promoting moral principles in artificial intelligence.

The main focus of the document is the call to "disarm AI." This is not an opposition to technology, but a plea to stop it from overpowering humanity and turning into a tool of violence and injustice.

Unlike a solely technological perspective, Pope Leo XIV advocates for revisiting the essential inquiry of what is a human being. He highlights that AI lacks emotions, has no physical form, and does not understand love or friendship from an internal perspective. As a result, it cannot possess human traits, let alone be entrusted with ethical decisions.
