Several European nations, such as the UK, France, and Germany, convened for an emergency meeting on Thursday to devise a reaction to requests from the administration of US President Donald Trump for the release of diesel fuel reserves, according to Politico.

As per the publication's sources, five European countries reached an agreement during the emergency meeting to show a "unified stance" in reaction to increasing pressure from the US government to utilize diesel reserves.

France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Ireland, and the European Commission took part in discussions to determine how to react to demands from Washington, which is pushing for the utilization of oil reserves while threatening a ban on US diesel exports.

Sources indicated that the US had been "discreetly urging all these nations to decrease their arsenals."

Sources from Politico indicated that the nations and the EU's executive branch reached consensus on three aspects: to address the pressures collaboratively; to guarantee that any decision regarding reserve reductions is decided at the International Energy Agency (IEA) level; and to aim for de-escalating tensions in communications with the US.

The IEA, located in Paris, orchestrates energy policy among advanced countries. Earlier this year, the agency managed the release of oil reserves after the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.

"The aim is to reduce the temperature," a source was quoted in the publication as stating. "To participate strongly yet positively." "Whenever you're faced with a hungry lion, it's unwise to engage in cruel tricks with it."
