ExxonMobil, an American energy company, has announced its intention to shut down the ethylene plant in Fife, Scotland, in February 2026.

The decision comes after the plant's ethylene production has turned unprofitable, primarily due to increased costs, a weak market, and the difficult economic conditions in the United Kingdom.

The closure will lead to the loss of jobs for around 180 employees and 250 contractors.

Approximately 50 of the employees are expected to be moved to the Fawley petrochemical complex, which is situated on the opposite side of the UK, near the south coast, close to Southampton.
