Google Warned By Donald Trump Over Its Alleged China Relationship

07/27/2019

United States president Donald Trump warned Google Inc. over the tech giant’s alleged relationship with China Opens a New Window.

This warning comes at the heels of the company rejoicing over a 19 per cent jump in its most recently closed quarter.

"There may or may not be National Security concerns with regard to Google and their relationship with China. If there is a problem, we will find out about it. I sincerely hope there is not!!!" Trump tweeted on Friday.

Earlier this month, Google was severely accused of having “treasonous” ties to China by the billionaire investor Peter Thiel. That was followed by a stern word of caution for the tech giant by Trump earlier this month. Following an initial disclosure during a conference, Thiel detailed his opinions during an interview with Fox's Tucker Carlson. Thiel is a board member of another tech giant Facebook and is also the co-founder of PayPal. He was severely critical of the search giant because it had developed working relationship with China and the country's military and had decided not to work with the US Defense Department.

Following the comments about it made by Thiel, Google told the media in a statement: "As we have said before, we do not work with the Chinese military."

After the allegations against Google made by Thiel, there was a response to it from Trump through a tweet, his favourite mode of communicating on public issues, wherein he said that he would be recommending that a “look” needs to be taken at the activities of Google and would make the recommendation to various federal agencies, and possibly the Justice Department.

“Billionaire Tech Investor Peter Thiel believes Google should be investigated for treason. He accuses Google of working with the Chinese Government. @foxandfriends A great and brilliant guy who knows this subject better than anyone! The Trump Administration will take a look!” ,” Trump tweeted.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was also called on by Theil to answer three questions about the company in relation to China.

“I would say answer my three questions.  How many foreign intelligence agencies have infiltrated Google?  Have the Chinese, in particular, infiltrated?  And why are you working with Communist China and not the U.S.?  What is the reason you’re doing that?” Thiel told the media.

Google as well as its investors were rejoicing a day earlier with a 19 per cent jump in the sale revenues of the tech giant at $38.9 billion exceeding as the company reported better than expected second quarter performance and exceeded analyst estimates, resulting a surge in its stock prices. So far this year, the stock price of the company jumped by 8 per cent, but is yet significantly below the 25 per cent surge in the overall stocks of the Nasdaq Composite.
