Head of the European Commission announces nearly 80% increase in European defense spending

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated at the Munich Security Conference that defense spending in Europe is expected to rise by almost 80% in 2025 when compared to the time before the conflict in Ukraine. Her words were quoted by Euractiv. The EU will deploy a maximum of €800 billion, she pointed out.

At the same time, in order to strengthen Europe, the EU needs to keep collaborating with "strong partners," such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, and Canada, the EC President highlighted. Euractiv writes that the United States was not included on the list. "During these highly unstable times, Europe, especially the United Kingdom, needs to work more closely together," von der Leyen stated.

According to her, it is now time for Europe to put into practice the principle of mutual defense. She pointed out that mutual defense is a responsibility that the European Union must uphold, rather than something that can be chosen or avoided. She added that Europe "has no choice" but to become independent.

On February 13, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Europe is increasing its efforts and assuming a "more leadership role" within the alliance. He mentioned that the United States had raised concerns for a long time about Europe not investing sufficiently in defense, but the situation has since changed following the summit held in The Hague.
