Huawei aims for this new strategy to enable it to manufacture more sophisticated chips without the specialized machinery utilized by its rivals, which has been restricted by US officials. It asserts that by 2031, it will have the capability to manufacture high-performance chips with a transistor density comparable to a 1.4-nanometer process technology.
Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and Samsung Electronics intend to start mass-producing these chips in the next few years, utilizing specialized machinery from the Dutch firm ASML.
The Wall Street Journal reports that if Huawei effectively achieves mass production of the most advanced chips, it will eliminate a significant barrier for China in its technological rivalry with the US. Additionally, Huawei's manufacturing of chips might be more cost-effective than that of its rivals.
"Whether this grants Huawei a distinct edge is uncertain, but it certainly represents an alternative development route, a milestone the firm has reached despite supply chain difficulties," observes Liang Jie Su, an analyst at Omida in Singapore.
Since 2019, the US government has placed Huawei on a blacklist, restricting its access to advanced semiconductor technologies starting in 2025.
