Iranian officials have not publicly declared the selection of a new Supreme Leader. On March 1, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that the election would occur in the coming days.
Subsequently, The New York Times, referencing three Iranian officials, stated that Mojtaba Khamenei had emerged as the top candidate for the role of Supreme Leader. As per sources from the newspaper, Iranian officials might declare his appointment on the morning of March 4.
On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated airstrikes targeting Iran. On that same day, Reuters announced that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed in an air raid on his home in Tehran.
