Italian regulator expands investigation into Meta's AI policies

Italy's antitrust authority, the Autorita Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), has broadened its inquiry into Meta's approach to AI policies, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, which references an official statement from the AGCM.

The regulator has begun examining WhatsApp's October policy that excludes third-party chatbots from its platform, as well as Meta's own use of AI features within the app.

The AGCM believes this policy might restrict production, limit market access, or hinder progress in AI-driven chatbots, which could affect users. The regulator has not ruled out the chance that Meta is breaking EU antitrust rules and could be subjected to temporary actions as a result of its policies.

The AGCM started looking into the integration of the AI-powered messaging feature into WhatsApp in July.

Meta itself stated that it firmly disagrees with the AGCM's allegations.
