According to the agency, Akazawa stated advancements have been achieved on $550 billion in investments; this effort is linked to last year's trade agreement with the US.

"We will keep collaborating with the US," he stated to reporters following discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamison Greer.

Nevertheless, he chose not to reveal specifics regarding the third set of investments. He pointed out the progress in discussions regarding artificial intelligence and microchip technologies, along with the advancement of related projects advantageous to both Japan and the US.

Akazawa stated that no additional tariffs beyond those specified in the trade agreement ought to be implemented.

In late July 2025, US President Donald Trump declared that a trade agreement had been signed by Washington and Tokyo. He mentioned that according to the agreement, Tokyo would incur a 15% tariff on American imports and invest $550 billion in the US.

The initial investment tranche totaled $36 billion and was designated for the gas and mining industries. The second tranche of $73 billion is designated for nuclear initiatives in Tennessee and Alabama, as well as natural gas power plants in Pennsylvania and Texas.
