In his speech, Mamdani said that his victory gives him the chance to bring about major changes in the city's policies.

His main competitor, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, extended his congratulations on Mamdani's win, as did Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Mamdani is set to begin his duties on January 1, 2026.

He will become the youngest person to hold the position of mayor and the first Muslim mayor in New York City.

On the day before the election, US President Donald Trump encouraged New Yorkers to vote for Cuomo.

During an interview with CBS that aired on Sunday, Trump said, "I'm not a fan of Cuomo at all, but if I had to choose between a bad Democrat and a communist, I'd frankly always pick the bad Democrat."

Trump also warned that he would stop federal funding for the city, keeping only the essential amount, if Mamdani were to win. The president claimed that if Mamdani were to take office, New York City would face "complete and utter economic and social disaster."

Mamdani has been a strong critic of Israeli policies. He has also supported measures such as rent controls, affordable retail options, and free public transportation.
