"We are absolutely committed to ensuring that AI serves people, provides real value and is under human control," Smith told The Wall Street Journal newspaper. The president of Microsoft went on to say that it was "most sensible" to establish a new federal agency to supervise the advancement of AI.

Smith also said governments should prioritise measures to protect AI systems involved in "critical infrastructure" such as power grids or urban transport systems.

He added that the administration should decree that any company selling AI technology to the government must implement the voluntary AI risk management system recently published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Smith added that informal discussions between Microsoft and other members of the sector about a voluntary set of standards for AI systems have already taken place.
