NASA Crashed the Second Cessna 172 for Science

NASA engineers broke a second Cessna 172 aircraft in the course of experiments aimed at improving the quality of emergency location transmitters (ELT) transmitting a signal about the location of the vehicle after its fall. The details of the project are reported in NASA’s press release.



Light aircraft Cessna 172, model of 1958 year, was brought down on the earth from a height of 30 meters on the ground in the Research Center of NASA's Langley. This is the second experiment in this project: before, the aircraft hit the concrete.

Despite the obvious, the hard landing on the clay proved to be more damaging to the vehicle than a collision with the concrete. In the second case, it slides forward for some time, allowing part of it to dissipate energy. When a plane hit soil, it stops abruptly, and all the energy is absorbed by the structure and its passengers.

Among other things, the engineers identify vulnerable beacons location. These devices consist of two basic components: a beacon installed inside the fuselage, and an antenna arranged on the outer side of the casing.

Experts point out that one reason for "Boeing-777"’s disappearance, which carried out the flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014, wad exhausted battery emergency beacon.
