New Zealand declines to join NATO Defense Bank

10/05/2026

New Zealand has turned down an offer to join the Defense, Security, and Resilience Bank (DSRB), a program initiated by Canada to meet the defense requirements of NATO countries. The news was reported by local broadcaster RNZ, referencing the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry indicated that the defense sector would gain more advantages from actions that improve market prospects than from establishing a specific defense funding system. It estimates that New Zealand's initial investment to join the DSRB would be $56 million, with the possibility of increased costs in the future. In late August, Canada was informed by New Zealand of its decision.

The idea of creating a bank to address the collective defense needs of allied countries appeared in 2024. The establishment of the bank has received backing from ten nations. The DSRB seeks to garner around $133 billion.

Using a proportional contribution model, Ottawa is anticipated to donate as much as $1.7 billion in the first phase, whereas smaller countries would give between €500 million and €750 million each.
