For Nintendo, this will be the first major power upgrade to the Switch since launch. The company is likely following the example of its rivals Sony and Microsoft, which released more powerful models of their consoles a few years after the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In 2019, Nintendo released a portable Switch Lite that, unlike the original version, couldn't be connected to a TV. At the same time, the company introduced a standard version with a higher battery performance. Rumors of a powerful Nintendo Switch also surfaced in 2019, when the console was called Switch Pro.

By July 2020, Nintendo had sold over 61 million Nintendo Switch consoles. In 2020, the main hit of the console was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold 2.4 million copies.
