“Let all captured soldiers be freed and children reunite with their families,” Leo XIV said to the thousands of worshippers assembled in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

The new pope also addressed the conflict in the Gaza Strip. “I am profoundly troubled by the events occurring in the Gaza Strip. Let there be an instant halt to hostilities,” he stated. And demanded humanitarian assistance for the "weary civilian population and the liberation of all hostages.”

The pope likewise praised the truce between India and Pakistan. He vowed to pray for a “miracle of peace” for all neglected global conflicts.

Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost was chosen as the 267th Pope on May 9. Prevost, 69, who possesses both U.S. and Peruvian citizenship and resided there for numerous years, selected the name Leo XIV.
