Ten members of the Security Council supported Ms. Grynspan, while three opposed her and two chose to abstain. The IAEA noted that Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s candidate, and Rafael Grossi, the agency chief, each garnered eight votes; nonetheless, six members opposed Rodrigues-Birkett, while seven opposed Grossi.
During the third round of preliminary voting on September 18, Rebeca Grynspan received nine votes supporting her candidacy, five votes opposing, and one abstention.
António Guterres, having completed two consecutive five-year terms as UN Secretary-General, will resign on December 31. The Security Council is choosing a candidate to propose to the UN General Assembly as his replacement. Seven aspirants are presently competing for the role.
