Bavarian automaker Bayerische Motoren Werke said that sales in January rose to 169538 vehicles, as the brand's sales rose 3.4% to 148400 vehicles.

The increase in sales can partly be explained by the update of the model range, which, according to the automaker, will boost sales and increase the company's market share in 2018.

"As availability increases throughout the year, this will be reflected in our sales results," said a representative of the board of directors responsible for sales, citing the launch of new and updated models.

Deliveries of the new BMW 5 Series sedan grew by 40%, and the new version of the BMW 6 Series more than doubled the total sales of the model in January, he added.

Sales of BMW mini-cars grew by 7% to 7,155 units, while motobike sales increased by 12.7% per month, BMW said.

According to the company, sales of electric and hybrid cars increased by 37% to 7155 cars.

Earlier, BMW reported record sales last year amid strong demand for its sports cars. However, sales of Mercedes-Benz exceeded this figure, which did not change the order in the trilateral race of German automakers.

Sales of BMW brand models rose 4.2% in 2017 to 2.09 million cars and SUVs, the Munich carmaker said, compared with a 9.9% increase to 2.29 million units sold by Mercedes, which took first place in the global ranking of sales of luxury cars for the second year in a row.
