Scientists Have Formulated ‘Herbal Antibiotics’

A new study reveals that a few commonly known plants possess the antibiotic agents which can be useful.

One of Amity institute’s “biotechnology faculty” conducted a research on isolating an “antibiotic like compound” from wild plants that grow commonly around us. The said study was carried on by Professor Priti Mathur in partnership with Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences’ Dr Manodeep Sen along with Central Drug Research Institute’s Sanjeev Kanojiya.

Their research report has been published in the “International journal of Phytomedicine” which informs that the usage of antibiotics are common in treating bacterial infection, while in some cases they also act as a prevention mechanism. These antibiotic agents are usually “isolated from bacteria”. However, the recent study showed that the same can now be retrieved from “wild plants as well”.

In the words of professor Mathur:
"While evaluating wild plants for their anti-bacterial activity, we found antibiotic characterization in the leaves of a few plants”.
"We conducted research on eleven plants and found antibiotic characterization in all of them. Of these eleven, we would conduct further experiments on three plants, Datura, Bhang and Chirayata, which have shown high antibiotic characteristics”.

Moreover, Mathur also informed that “nature agents” are likely to cause “fewer side-effects”, besides being “safer” in comparison to “synthetic antibiotics”. In fact, the natural agents involved in her study will also prove “cost-effective” which can be generated on a mass production scale.

At present, Mathur is in the process of acquiring a “patent” for her “herbal antibiotic formulation”.
