US President Barack Obama has sought to include in the government's budget for 2017 about $ 89 million to supply various ministries and departments with information technologies. However, for already the seventh year, the lion's share of this sum will go to current operating expenses and maintenance of existing systems. The volume of funds allocated for the modernization, development and improvement of IT-technologies use decreased by a total of $ 7.3 billion. As a result, the report said, many government agencies use devices and software aged more than half a century.
The Ministry of Defence, for example, still carries out operational management of the country’s nuclear forces with help of IBM Series/1 computers, released in 1976, and 8-inch floppy disks, which appeared even earlier. With their help, the Ministry co-ordinates work of intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear bombers and refueling tankers aircraft. In turn, the country’s treasury stores and updates incoming funds of taxpayers using computer code that existed in the 1950s, and was developed for the then existing computers.
The US Defense Department has assured that it will replace obsolete equipment and software by the end of 2017. "This system is still used simply because it basically works. However, to do away with the problem of obsolete technology, floppy disks will be replaced in 2017 with security digital data devices, "- said the representative of the Ministry Colonel Valerie Henderson.
