11/19/2015

A division of the Japanese Sony, responsible for smartphones production, plans to start developing its own processors for mobile devices.

According to insiders, Sony intends to follow the lead of competitors such as Apple, Samsung Electronics and Huawei. Sources say that the company Global Unichip, which develops specific integrated circuits, has received several orders for the production of mobile processors from Asian phone manufacturers.

Apparently, Sony is among them, but no details about the Japanese semiconductor products group are given. If Sony really enters the market of mobile processors, this may affect sales of the present leaders Qualcomm, MediaTek and Spreadtrum Communications in 2016

Previously, Sony officials said the company does not intend to leave the smartphone market despite numerous rumors. Sony will continue to produce smartphones and rumors of the vendor’s readiness to leave the market does not correspond to reality, said Head of the Taiwan office of Sony Mobile, Jonathan Ling in October this year.

Instead, the company plans to improve t displays of produced smartphones, their cameras and batteries, offering consumers an even more pleasant experience to work with them. He also noted that Sony Mobile plans to attract more marketing resources to stimulate sales, and expects to take about 30% of the Taiwanese market with its Android smartphones.

Sony’s intention to keep its position on the smartphone market is confirmed by the company's plans to construct another plant for production of these devices.

The new facility will be built on basis of the factory in the province of Pathum Thani (Taiwan), work at which was suspended due to the large-scale flooding in 2011

Earlier, Head of Sony Kazuo Hirai during its management got rid of some unprofitable destinations such as PC unit VAIO in an effort to draw the company out of financial crisis. However, the company remains committed to not only mobile, but also the television business. After years of losses, the TV division returned to profit in the fiscal year ended in March 2015.

The Japanese vendor has no plans to abandon the TV business in the future, as it brings the company a number of important indirect benefits. In particular, TVs help to maintain Sony’s brand image by. Besides, research and development in the field of TV are used in many other types of the company's products, such as game consoles and smartphones, stressed Hirai.
