Knot has directed the Dutch central bank for 14 years, holding two successive terms that will conclude in June 2025.
According to a spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Finance, he has been granted official backing from his country's government as a candidate for the ECB presidency. The spokesperson stated that Knot is very well-equipped to take on additional leadership roles at the ECB that will be available in the upcoming months.
Knot is seen as a top candidate for the position of president of the European Central Bank, alongside former Bank of Spain governor Pablo Hernández de Cos, who now leads the Bank for International Settlements. The Spanish government has already backed the latter for the position of ECB President.
The current term of ECB President Christine Lagarde, which lasts eight years, will end in October 2027. Nonetheless, in early July, she suggested that she could resign from the position before her term's official conclusion to concentrate on French policy. At a press conference after the ECB meeting on July 23, Lagarde mentioned that she intends to stay in her position until at least the end of this year.
In the coming year, the ECB will witness the opening of the Chief Economist position, presently occupied by Philip Lane, as well as the seat on the Executive Board held by Isabel Schnabel.
