One of the key issues on the trade and economic agenda for the upcoming discussions between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is China's export controls on rare earth metals, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who spoke on Monday.

"I won't go into specifics, but I can say our aim is to make sure these broad controls are not implemented," he said during an interview with Fox News.

Greer mentioned that both sides had "very constructive discussions (...) to find a way forward," but he added that "it will be up to President Trump and President Xi Jinping" to decide the final outcome.

The day before, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US and Chinese sides had reached agreement on the main points of a trade deal.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also shared on its website that during the talks, "the Chinese and US delegations reached a basic consensus on mechanisms for resolving relevant trade issues."

Previously, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced it would impose export controls on several rare earth-related products starting November 8.

Trump described the decision as "hostile" and said he planned to respond by imposing 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, as well as implementing export controls on Chinese software.
