The World's Largest Wind Farm To Be Built in the UK

02/04/2016

The leading Danish energy company Dong Energy reported that it’s going to build a huge offshore wind turbines complex off the UK’s east coast by 2020. This project has already received approval of the British government, and will become the world's largest wind power plant with capacity of 1.2 GW, able to provide energy for more than 1 million homes.

According to Dong Energy’s statement, yesterday the company made the final investment decision on the project Hornsea Project One, in which Dong Energy will built the world's largest wind farm near the eastern coast of the United Kingdom. The station will be located off the coast of Yorkshire near the town of Hornsea. Previously, the project has already received the UK government’s approval: in April 2014, the authorities decided to give the project favorable fixed rates for the first 15 years of operation. The station’s construction should be completed by 2020, with planned working capacity of 1 GW. Upon completion of the project, the Danish energy company will bring the total capacity of its wind power plants up to 6.5 GW.

The company says that the new station will provide electricity to more than 1 million homes in the UK. It will be located 120 km from the coast and occupy an area of 407 square meters.

Investment in alternative renewable energy, particularly wind, continue to grow despite the fall in oil prices. Last Tuesday, the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) said that investment in wind power generation in Europe have doubled and reached a record level - € 13,3 billion – in 2015. EWEA added that 2015 was the year of launching wind farms a total capacity of 3 GW - twice more than in 2014, bringing the total capacity of coastal wind power plants in Europe up to 11 GW. The most active last year wind power capacities were put into operation in Germany (2.2 GW), the UK (556 MW) and the Netherlands (180 MW). General Director of EWEA Giles Dixon believes that the total capacity of power plants in Europe will reach 20 GW by 2020.
