Shaheen stated that "the harmful effects of nuclear testing on Americans and the environment are part of our history that should remain in the past."

She was supported by Senator Jacky Rosen, who spoke at a Senate hearing and said that Trump made the decision "without any solid evidence showing it was necessary."

Rosen warned that if testing were to continue, "the amount of radiation exposure and the destruction it would cause would be felt across the country and worldwide," and that it would be "extremely damaging and dangerous."

Senator Mark Kelly also told reporters that the United States does not require nuclear testing.

The day before, Trump announced that he had ordered the Pentagon to start nuclear weapons testing immediately.
