According to the Financial Times, US universities might forfeit roughly $1 billion in income due to the decline in international students who cannot or do not wish to study in the United States because of policies enacted by President Donald Trump.

Stricter applicant evaluations, visa holdups, and immigrant detentions at borders and campuses are instilling fear in students and higher education administrators who have become dependent on foreign nationals to occupy positions and boost income in recent years.

Seventy-five percent of universities recently polled by the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs (NAFSA) anticipate a drop in international student enrollment this year. The majority project losses of 10% or greater.

According to education consultancy Shorelight Analytics, this would result in universities losing close to $900 million from the $8.6 billion in direct tuition revenue generated by international students.
