WHO urges to prepare for new pandemic

Richard Peabody, an epidemiologist for the World Health Organization (WHO), told the Spanish newspaper El Pais that the global community needs to be ready for the chance that bird flu could spark a new pandemic.

Now, as the expert pointed out, there are worries that this infection could spread persistently and from person to person.

"We need to get ready for this. The genetic makeup of these viruses is being researched by scientists in order to keep track of them and create vaccines that will be accessible when required," he added.

According to Peabody, the current outbreak, which has killed millions of domestic and wild birds globally, started two to three years ago due to a particular A(H5N1) virus strain.
