About 850,000 Syrian refugees have come back to Syria from nearby countries since December 2024, when former President Bashar al-Assad left the country, according to the Associated Press (AP), which quoted a UN official.

Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Kelly Clements told the newspaper that around 1.7 million Syrians who were forced to leave their homes during the 14-year war are now returning to their homes.

The AP also said that the number of refugees coming back to Syria might reach 1 million in the next few weeks.

Clements said the number of people returning is very high.

Right now, the most Syrian refugees are in Lebanon, which has the largest number of refugees per person in the world.

Earlier, Lebanese officials told illegal Syrian migrants to leave the country by the end of August.

Clements also mentioned that about 190,000 more people were forced to leave their homes in southern Syria because of fighting between government forces and Druze fighters in June.

She said the Damascus-Suwayda highway, which had been closed for weeks, is now open, “which is very important because it will allow much more humanitarian aid to get into the area.”
