Alibaba Browser Upstages Apple's Safari

According to StatCounter, a browser made by UCWeb company, subsidiary of the Chinese giant Alibaba Group, came in second place in the world for installation on mobile phones. Thus, the app has overtaken Apple's Safari browser. UC Browser’s share on mobile phones was 17.42% in the world in October 2015.

UCWeb itself explain the annual growth by the browser getting increasing popular on such major markets as India and Indonesia. In October 2015, share of UC Browser reached 54.4% in India. To compare, it was 39% in November 2014. In Indonesia, the proportion increased from 16% to 49% over 12 months.

According to President of Alibaba mobile business Yu Yongfu, the company is ranked second in the world not only because of hegemony on the domestic market, but also "a lot of progress and the growth of the share in foreign markets."

UC Browser is now ranked first in China, India and Indonesia - countries included in the top five in the world in terms of population. Total number of these countries’s inhabitants is 2.8 billion people, or more than a third of the world population. Also, UC Browser is leading in Pakistan, with share of 33.76% as of October 2015.

"Popularity of UC Browser is associated with high-performance, easy access to local content and services, and distribution network UC Union - the global mobile marketing platform," - said UCWeb in a statement. UC Union is an affiliated mobile network for traffic exchange with UCWeb. UC Union places UC Browser’s ad on popular sites - for example, social networks, and then collects statistics and provides analytics on frequency of use and so on.

Residents of developing countries take advantages of UC Browser, since it works via cloud technology with traffic compression up to 60%. This reduces load time for pages and saves costs of mobile Internet. Furthermore, the company enters into agreements with local content providers in every country where UCWeb offers the browser. China's largest holding company Alibaba Group bought software developer UCWeb in 2014. In December 2014, number of active users of UC Browser in the world exceeded 100 million per day.
