In a corporate blog post, Galetti explained, "The layoffs we are announcing today are part of our continued effort to reduce unnecessary layers of bureaucracy, streamline operations, and focus resources on areas that best serve our customers' current and future needs."

The company's total workforce, which includes drivers and employees at distribution centers, is about 1.55 million people. However, the number of corporate positions is around 350,000.

Amazon will release its earnings report for the quarter ending September 30 on Thursday.
