BMW lowers car sales in Q1

German carmaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) in the first quarter of 2022 reduced car sales by 6.2% year on year to 596.907 thousand cars, while electric car sales doubled, according to the company.

"After a strong start to the year in a highly volatile environment, the combined impact of the geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe and the quarantine in China overshadowed business development during the quarter," the release said.

BMW car sales fell 7.3% to 519,796,000 vehicles. Mini sales rose 1.1% to 74,487 cars and Rolls-Royce sales increased 17.7% to 1,624,000 cars.

At the same time sales of electric cars jumped 2.5 times, to 35.3 thousand units.

In the U.S., sales rose 3.7 percent to 80,59 thousand vehicles in the first quarter. In China, they declined by 9.2%, to 208.507 thousand cars. In Europe, sales fell 7.8% to 220,076 thousand BMW and Mini cars in the first three months. In Germany, they fell by 9.4%, to 61.552 thousand cars.
