A shortage of ships carrying raw materials from South America could cause a global shortage of toilet paper, Bloomberg reports.

According to the agency, Brazil is the world's largest supplier of raw wood, and Brazilian company Suzano Papel e Celulose accounts for a third of the global supply of raw materials needed to make toilet paper. The company uses bulk carriers to transport its cargo.

CEO Walter Schalka told the agency that demand for this type of vessel was growing, threatening to delay the company's deliveries. Schalka expressed concern that problems with the delivery of raw materials would accumulate and only worsen.

The publication notes that "significant disruptions in the pulp trade could eventually affect the supply of toilet paper if producers do not have sufficient stocks".
