US President-elect Donald Trump said on his microblog Twitter on Tuesday that he intends to appoint Rex Tillerson, "one of the truly great business leaders in the world", a new Secretary of State.
Graduated as an engineer, 64-year-old Mr. Tillerson has built his career with Exxon. He has held the position of Chairman of the Board and ExxonMobil’s CEO since 2006. In 2012, he was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship "for his great contribution to development and strengthening of cooperation with the Russian Federation."
Rumors about possible candidates for the post of Secretary of State in Donald Trump’s team began to appear a few days after the presidential elections on 8 November. One of the likely candidates for the position was called Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, was the Republican candidate in the 2012 presidential election. During the last election campaign, he unleashed a barrage of criticism on Donald Trump, calling him "phony" and "fraud". This, however, did not prevent him from establishing relations with newly elected President after his victory, and even declare that Trump could lead America "to a better future". In addition, the position of Secretary of State was prophesied to General David Petraeus, Former CIA Director (resigned after a scandal with hacked email address of his lover). Above that, media mentioned other closer candidates, such as former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton, or Senator from Tennessee and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Bob Corker.
Acting Secretary of State John Kerry said recently that he was not going to "quietly into the night," as quoted by Boston Globe. "We are waiting for a huge amount of debate and controversy over foreign policy in the future", - warned the diplomat after Donald Trump announced his intention to reconsider a number of foreign agreements, which the United States concluded in the last few years. However, he didn’t answer definitely on a question if he is going to work in an international organization, university or business. Apart from retiring, 73-year-old Secretary of State always have an opportunity to go to business: his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry holds a significant part of Heinz company.
