A court has cleared former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who received an eight-month suspended prison sentence in 2024 for lying under oath during a parliamentary investigation into purported corruption in his administration, reported the Associated Press on Monday.

A report indicated that a Vienna court determined Kurz to be innocent following a brief appeal hearing.

'It proved what I have consistently claimed - that I did not provide untrue statements during the parliamentary inquiry,' the former chancellor informed reporters following the judges' verdict announcement.

In February 2024, Judge Michael Radasztics concluded that Kurz was guilty of lying regarding his involvement in the establishment of the holding company OeBAG. The organization oversees Austria's investments in companies that are either partially or entirely nationalized, as reported by the Associated Press.

In the meantime, prosecutors charged Kurz with lying about his involvement in appointing his close associate Thomas Schmid to the company's management; however, the court did not convict the former chancellor in that instance.

That decision marked the conclusion of a trial that spanned four months.
