Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), has emphasized that investing in security and the inclusion of new nations into the European Union are “key imperatives” for shaping the EU's future.

She stated that the European Union must create “a new version of Pax Europaea for the 21st century that will be defined and led by Europe itself.”

“Therefore, the necessity to enhance our security is increasingly pressing. We understand that this funding will not originate from other sources. Times are evolving, and Europe is evolving along with them. The reality that we are currently allocating as much as €800 billion to defense was unthinkable only a few years back. And the reality that member states are raising their defense budgets to unprecedented levels would have also been unimaginable,” von der Leyen stated, addressing attendees Thursday in Aachen, Germany, during a ceremony to receive the Charlemagne International Prize.

“We are doing this to dedicate all efforts to the protection of peace. A new global order will arise in this decade. If we are unwilling to merely accept the repercussions this will have for Europe and the globe, we must create this new order. History excuses neither uncertainty nor procrastination. Our objective is European autonomy,” the EC leader stated.

Among the EU's primary objectives “for a sovereign Europe,” she also mentioned “pursuing the upcoming historic reunification of the continent.”
