Global steel production rises in eight months

Global steel production totalled 1.322 billion tonnes in January-August 2021, up 10.6% year-on-year, according to the World Steel Association (WSA).

CIS countries, according to preliminary data, increased steel output by 17.7% to 70.9 million tonnes. The EU countries produced 102.1 million tonnes of steel (an increase of 20.5%), including Germany - 26.7 million (an increase of 17.4%). The remaining European countries increased steel output by 15.5% to 33.9 million tonnes.

Steel output in Asia and Oceania increased by 8.5% to 966.3 million tonnes, including China's 5.3% to 733 million, India's 25.6% to 77.7 million. North America produced 78.8 million tonnes (up 19.2%), including a 19.5% increase in the United States to 57.1 million tonnes. South America increased steel output by 24.9% to 30.3 million tonnes, including Brazil's 20.9% increase to 24.1 million tonnes.

Africa produced 10.6 million tonnes of steel (up 30.3%), the Middle East 29 million (up 10.1%), including 20.4 million tonnes in Iran (up 9.7%).

Global steel production, according to the WSA, was approximately 1.829 billion tonnes last year, down 0.9% from 2019.
