The Italian authority mandated the “immediate” limitation of user data handling for Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence and Beijing DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence. The authorities sought details from DeepSeek regarding how it collects personal data, but considered the reply "inadequate."
“The companies claimed they did not conduct business in Italy and that European law was not applicable to them, which contradicts the authority's findings,” the regulator mentioned in a statement.
DeepSeek launched its R1 AI model on January 20. The company announced that it is on par with its Western rivals and is also considerably less expensive. On Monday, this triggered a drop in stock values of American tech firms linked to AI development. Microsoft and OpenAI believe DeepSeek is involved in data theft.
