JTI's net income grows in 2021

Japan Tobacco International (JTI), one of the world's largest tobacco manufacturers, posted a 9.1% increase to 338.5 billion yen ($2.93 billion) in net income for 2021, the company said in a statement.

Operating profit rose 6.4% year on year to 499 billion yen ($4.33 billion). JTI's year-end revenue was 2.324 trillion yen ($20.7 billion), up 11.1%.

The fourth-quarter loss was about 300 million yen ($2.6 million) compared with a profit of 52.3 billion yen ($450 million at current exchange rates) for the same period in 2020. Operating profit fell 77% from November to December to 18.3 billion yen ($160 million). Revenue for the quarter to the same period in 2020, meanwhile, rose 11.6% to 558.8 billion yen ($4.85 billion).

In 2022, the company expects revenues to drop 0.4% in 2021 to 2.315 trillion yen ($20.1 billion), operating income to 534 billion yen ($4.64 billion) by 7% and net income to 356 billion yen ($3.1 billion) by 5.2%.
